Hong Kong Open: Clean sweep from China

China delivered a masterclass in dominance at LI-NING Hong Kong Open 2025, becoming the first nation to win all five titles at an HSBC BWF World Tour tournament.

Before the World Tour was introduced in 2018, China were also the last to complete a sweep during the SuperSeries era – at Denmark Open in 2014.

At the Hong Kong Coliseum on Sunday, after Wang Zhi Yi edged an all-China women’s singles final against defending champion Han Yue 21-14 24-22, Liang Wei Keng/Wang Chang put their country on the path to perfection with a 19-21 21-14 21-17 win over Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty. It also ended the pair’s title drought that had lingered since the 2024 Denmark Open.

Jia Yi Fan/Zhang Shu Xian then overcame Rin Iwanaga/Kie Nakanishi 21-17 21-15 before Feng Yan Zhe/Huang Dong Ping defeated compatriots Guo Xin Wa/Chen Fang Hui 21-14 21-14, leaving Li Shi Feng with the opportunity to finish the job. And finish it he did, with aplomb, needing just two games to beat Lakhsya Sen 21-15 21-12.

“Of course there was pressure being the last one to play but I tried not to think too much about it. Just focused on one rally at a time and gave my best,” said Li post-match. “Plus, when I reach a final, no matter at what level, I always want to win.”

Li also credited China’s team spirit for their collective success.

“It’s a team effort and we are a very united team. We always support and encourage each other,” said the 25-year-old, reflecting on a day that will be etched in badminton history.
